Environmental, Social & Governance At HEXO

We’re working towards a better tomorrow. And this is just the beginning.

We’re working towards a better tomorrow. And for us, moving forward starts at neutral.

At HEXO, we believe that true leadership is about more than creating innovative brands and becoming a market-leading cannabis company. Too often, sustainability is sacrificed in the name of profitability. As a leader in Canada’s cannabis industry, we are challenging ourselves and our peers to do better – and do it now.

To that end, we are proud to say that we are officially carbon neutral, having offset 100% of our 2020 operational carbon emissions in addition to the personal emissions of our 1,200 employees*.

*Estimated personal emissions based on the average Canadian’s emissions from heating and powering their homes, driving and food consumption

Operations, Employees & Plastic

Through our partnership with Offsetters, we are supporting initiatives such as reducing tree harvesting in the Great Bear Rainforest, making our operations completely carbon neutral.

We’re taking carbon neutrality one step further by offsetting the personal carbon emissions of each of our 1,200 employees from 2020.

Working alongside Dymapak and Plastic Bank®, we’re counteracting our plastic use and supporting ethical recycling systems in coastal communities to stop ocean-bound plastics.

Our Sustainability Actions

Protecting Global Resources

We invested in carbon credits with Offsetters, a Vancouver-based organization that supports renewable energy and forest carbon projects across the world, to counteract the emissions produced by our operations and team. As a leading cannabis player in Canada, on the path to becoming one of the top three global cannabis products companies, it was important for HEXO’s offset investments to have a global reach. As such, we are supporting a large-scale solar energy project in Asian and a forest conservation project in South America.

Closer to home, we are helping reduce harvesting in our chosen Canadian project, the Great Bear Forest Carbon project. This landmark project balances human well-being and ecological integrity through carbon finance and is the first carbon project in North America on traditional territory with unextinguished Aboriginal rights and title.

Saving Our Oceans

We’re also proud to announce that we are offsetting the plastic used in our pouch packaging through Plastic Bank in partnership with Dymapak, HEXO's primary packaging supplier.

Plastic Bank builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities and reprocesses the materials for reintroduction into the global manufacturing supply chain. Collectors receive a premium for the materials they collect to help them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, school tuition and health insurance. Through Plastic Bank, we’re not only offsetting the plastic used in our pouch packaging, we’re helping to improve lives and developing communities around the globe. As of October 2021, we will have stopped the equivalent of 3.55 million plastic bottles from entering the world’s oceans.

Stopped the equivalent of 3.55 million plastic bottles from entering the world’s oceans.

But we know that’s not enough.

We’re also working towards:
  • Finding innovative solutions to reduce or repurpose waste with a cohort of other LPs and Synergie Économique Laurentide (SEL)

  • New sustainable packaging options considering materials that are more easily recyclable or biodegradable

  • Sourcing renewable energy
  • Enabling a more virtual workforce in an effort to reduce our office footprint

  • Collaborating with our customers, partners and vendors to reduce environmental impacts across our value chain

“As a mother, I worry about the state of the planet we'll be leaving for our children. I’m proud to be working for a company that cares about our planet and is leading the industry in sustainable action.”

In memory of the Indigenous children whose remains continue to be discovered in unmarked graves across Canada, HEXO Corp will make a donation to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. The Society provides cultural, physical and emotional support to residential school survivors and intergenerational survivors and their families. Additionally, the funds will enable 24/7 crisis operations during this traumatic time.

We value our connections with Indigenous communities and believe it is time to acknowledge not only our collective history but the current and lasting trauma that has been inflicted on generations of Indigenous people.
